History & Operation of Geothermal Systems
Slide5.JPG

Archaeological evidence shows that the first human use of geothermal resources in North America occured more than 10,000 years ago with the settlement of Paleo-Indians at hot springs. The springs served as a source of warmth and cleansing, their minerals as a source of healing. While people still soak in shallow pools heated by the earth, engineers are developing technologies that will allow us to probe more than 10 miles below the Earth's surface in search of geothermal energy

Today's Geothermal Designs
  • Began in mid-late 1970's with the advert of plastic pipe which made loops reliable.
  • WSHP equipment was hand modified for extended range operation.
  • Three 'hot beds' of geothermal activity
    • 1978 - Oklahoma - Jim Bose/Jim Partin
    • 1979 - Indiana - Dan Ellis
    • 1980 - Ontario, Canada - Dave Hatherton

Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) Technolgy
  • Began in the late 1950's early 60's as "California Heat Pump System".
  • 3/4 -10 ton WSHP's connected to internal building loop.
  • Excess loop heat rejected by cooling tower. Heat added to loop via boiler.
  • Provided core to perimeter heat recovery for good energy efficiency.
  • Decentralized equipment reduced system down time and improved comfort.
  • Small individual zones for increased occupant comfort.
  • Utilized residential compressors for high efficiency.
